The Faculty of Sports Science and Recreation was established in 1995. With its establishment, UiTM became the institution of higher learning in Malaysia to offer programmes in the field of sports management, leisure, recreation and sports science. The Faculty initially offers Diploma programmes in Sports and Recreational Management (SR 111), Leisure Management (SR 112), Sports Studies (SR 113) and Health and Fitness (SR 114).
In 1996, the faculty conducted a Master of Sports Science in collaboration with the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia. This was the first postgraduate degree in sports science been offered in Malaysia. The 18 month programme successfully produced its first batch of 29 graduates in 1998. These graduates are now holding important position in sports and recreational organisations throughout the country. The Faculty introduced its own postgraduate programme in Master of Sports Science (SR 770) by coursework in May 2002. The faculty subsequently introduced a Master in Sports Science (SR 780) by research and Doctor of Philosophy (SR 990) by research in July 2005. The degree programmes-Bachelor of Sports Management (Hons.) and Bachelor of Sports Science (Hons.) (SR 223) were introduced in 1999 in order to meet the growing demand for graduates in these areas. The degree programme – Bachelor of Sports Management (Hons.) through electronic distance learning (e-PJJ) was introduced in July 2005 to cater for the growing interest workers in pursuing their degree in part-time base in the area. Through these degree programmes, the faculty provides courses specialising in sports management, organisation of sports and recreation at national and international levels, marketing of sports and recreational activities, and sports and physical education studies.  Both the degree and diploma programmes also offer courses related to physiology, biomechanics, anatomy, kinesiology, motor learning, ethics in sports, sports psychology, sports and leisure marketing, sports communication, sport journalism, sports and media relations, outdoor recreation, exercise psychology, leadership in leisure and sports seminars. Sports management studies focused on the application of management skills in sports and recreational organisations. Students also learn different aspects of the sports industry. Sports science focused on the application of scientific methods on performance. Studies in these areas prepared students for career in the fitness industry, and/or any industry that is directly or indirectly related to sports science. It also ensures that students have the opportunity to work with elite performers, training programmes and research in sports.As globalization era is concerned, FSR is in work out to introduce 2 new degree programmes. |
